Bears Den implores citizens to 'Be Kind' during training week

Robert and Anita Lewis’ regulars returned yesterday. And by regulars we mean the girls – and a couple of boys – who carhop and cook each summer at the Bears Den. Robert calls the staff “a who’s who of Shelbyville.” Teens typically need an inside connection, perhaps an older sister or best friend, that worked the previous year. With their parents’ encouragement, the kids show up expecting to work. Robert Lewis, who also serves as the county Health Department manager, holds a reputation for setting standards that exceed basic food preparation and customer service. “They have to put their cell phones in here before starting their shift,” Robert said, pointing to a wall-mounted locker bay.

With a marquee that read “TRAINING WEEK / BE KIND,” the Bears Den opened yesterday for the sixteenth season under the Lewis’ ownership. Despite the rain, the regular customers returned as well. By 4:45 p.m., all eight spots under the main canopy were full. It would take more than weather and first day challenges to prevent frosty root beer mugs and hurry burgers from making another grand entrance at the throw-back carhop. The Bears Den will be open throughout the week from 4 to 9 p.m., with regular 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. hours resuming over the weekend. Over the next four months, Robert Lewis’ “regulars” – both staff and customers – will bring East Michigan road to life. If you’re looking for a true limited time offer, the Bears Den is worth a summertime visit. The regulars will be trained and waiting for you.
