This Day in Shelby County History: June 5
1917
Esther Ruff, 11, and her brother Robert, 8, were arrested for breaking into the S.B. Morris store and stealing hundreds of dollars of clothing. The clothing was found, with tags still attached, near Fountain Square in Indianapolis. It was unknown how the two transported the clothes. It was the fourth time Esther Ruff had been in trouble for theft. She had also taken a suitcase the same night belonging to Fred Bowen. The children were in custody of the sheriff with pending charges.
Peck Henry interrupted a discussion between Wiley Bramlett, a former member of city council, and William Maple, to voice his opinion that the war (World War I) was unnecessary. This caused an escalation that ended with Bramlett striking Henry to the ground. Charges were expected to be filed.
1942
Republican delegates met in the mayor’s office to organize for the biennial state meeting. Attendees were Alonzo Talbert, Ralph Rigdon, William Jones, Carlos Jeffries, Charles Miller, Russell Monroe, Ira Wood, Ray Ketner, David Robins, Dr. Sam Kennedy, Ralph Douglass, Robert Morris, Emery Hunt, J. Graham Lemmon, Dr. W.R. Tindall, and Lawrence Parker.
The county fire truck more than “earned its salt,” according to the Republican, after saving a barn struck by lightning.
Morristown officials ordered that all dogs must be penned up or kept on a leash by June 10.
1967
Judy Waltz, Fairland, was the top bowler in the Youth Bowling Association for the year.
Floyd Woolridge, 52, was shot at his home on Center St. Claude Owen Ping, 59, was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.
1977
Jeff Martin ended his high school career with a sixth-place shot put finish at state.
Gerald and Ione Rice were given a surprise open house in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary. Hosts were the couple’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Appleton.
Frank Barnes, coach during Shelbyville’s glory years, including the 1947 state basketball champion, came back to SHS to talk to Coach Pat Rady’s summer camp for kids.
1992
WTHR-TV, Channel 13, honored top Shelby County high school students Kimberly Ann Bandy, Shelby Rene Scott, Kelly Ann Gardner, Duane Eberhart, Steven Holt, and Jerry Ingram.
SHS spring sports awards winners were Mandy Reynolds, Mandy Dickmann, Emily Ramsey, Nicole Tindall, Courtney DeBaun, Joni Sanders, Heather Mateer, Matt Shuppert, Thor Andersen, Jason Garrison, Jerra French, Tara Branam, Celia Wheeler, Beate Stadler, J.D. Fulford, Travis Sosbe, Charles Boger, Jay Steele, Jim Adkins, David Hart, Jeff Hamilton, Eugene Hopkins, Keith England, and Bobby Stieneker.
