1917
Officials issued orders that all lunch wagons, popcorn wagons, and other devices on the streets be removed each Sunday. Previously, the stands could remain, despite being closed. The Chamber of Commerce voted to start collecting a “high license fee” from all street vendors.
Civil War vet Daniel Bowers, 80, died. He had been discharged from the war after taking a bullet wound in the left breast following 22 months in action.
1942
Twenty-three more local youths left for possible induction into the Army. They included Herschel Morrison, Johnnie Seward, Melvin Jeffries, Floyd Poe, Jim Hirschauer, Carroll Craig, Paul Mount, Bill Minton, Gerald Ham, Wesley Morgan, William Shaner, Edward Comstock, Fritz Chesser, Herbert Neeb, John McCrea, Charlie Campbell, Hugh Thoms, Gillis Craig, Woodrow Evans, Edwin Thieman, and Maurice Holmes.
1967
Norvella Miller was crowned “Mrs. Queen” at the St. Paul Street Fair, and Tere Owen, a St. Paul High School senior, was named “Miss Queen.” 1965 Street Fair Queen Patty Lee crowned the winners.
Belaire Shopping Center merchants continued to celebrate the plaza’s second anniversary with cake at the Cambridge Inn. Merchants present included Robert Bell, Vick Sexton (Cambridge Inn), Frank Shepherd (Barber Shop), Dave Robins (Robins TV), Louis Danner, Mary Kay Green (Paul Harris), James Knecht, (Belaire Banking Center), Fran Snyder (Paul Harris), and Lowell Adams (A&P).
1977
George Yarling, World War I veteran, was named Legionnaire of the Year at the Past Commanders’ Night at Shelbyville Victory Post No. 70. A plaque was presented by Harold Meloy, also a past commander.
The Board of Works voted to close off parking on Public Square at night due to continued littering of bottles and cans.
Irene Brunner and Nick Miller were named to the Shelbyville Central School board, succeeding Ron Ault and George Frost, whose terms had expired.
1992
Mike Wildman was recognized for scoring the third hole in one in Shelbyville so far in the year. Playing with him were Dave Anewalt, John Brown, and Jerry Caplinger. Top scorers in the Best Ball Tournament were Brooke Appleby, Rick Gaudin, Doug Drake, Tony Lennen, Bob Claxton, Mike Wildman, Jerry Caplinger, Mike Scott, Joe Collins, Jerry Martin, Joe Risley, Harry Meeke, Brian Meeke, Jerry Michel, Dick Dovidas, R.A. Longstreet, R.W. Longstreet, and C.G. Theobald.
