1917
City Council voted down a prohibition against firecrackers and fireworks on July the Fourth. “Shelbyville will not have a noiseless Fourth of July this year by any means,” a council member assured the public. “If a farmer….wants to sit on his porch and shoot shooting crackers, what concern is it of ours, anyway?” the council asked.
Marriage certificates were returned to the county clerk 15 years late by Rev. Boetcker, former pastor of the German Presbyterian church. The Rev. had found them tucked away in his office while preparing to move to Pennsylvania.
1942
The membership drive of the Shelbyville unit of the Indiana Symphony Society started. Committee members were Mary Margaret Beck, Mrs. F.L. Layden, Mrs. William Scott, Mrs. Joe Showers, Martha Hilligoss, Virginia Smith, Mrs. William Fuller, and Mrs. Fred Deitzer.
1967
Airman Edwin Limpus was stationed in Japan and Airman William Weber received his first Air Force duty assignment after basic training.
Stephen King, 18, 407 Sunset Dr., was awarded a Tri Kappa state scholarship.
Michael Silbert, son of Dr. and Mrs. David Silbert, Fairfield Dr., received his doctor of medicine degree from Indiana University.
1977
Shelby Central Schools hired the following new teachers: Debra Spell, Jerry Rice, Larry Grubb, Ed Raymond, Mary Agler, Denise Kaye Hendrix, Nancy Hanni, Nanette Finney, Diane Taylor, and Steve Kent.
Nine Waldron graduates were certified as Hoosier Scholars. They were Shoshanna McDaniel, Cheryl Crisp, Carol Douglas, Valynda Goodwin, Mike Knoll, Brett Morgason, John Sadler, Julie Spakers, and Sally Stader.
Earlene Wheeler was elected new president of the American Association of University Women, Shelbyville chapter, in a meeting held at the home of Vera Murphy. Leslie Doig was welcomed as a new member and Mildred McDonald was the outgoing president.
St. Paul hired Dallas McQuery as town marshall.
1992
Shelbyville’s David Hart and Southwestern’s Jeremy Wright captured state titles in the boys track finals at Indiana University.
