This Day in Shelby County History: June 12
1917
B.F. Whaley gave four dozen tomato and cabbage plants free to anyone who asked. He said he had 200,000 plants to give away.
The Fly Swatting Campaign closed. Recent cold, damp weather hampered efforts to collect the dead flies and return them to Miss McCaslin in the Alhambra building for a prize. Winners would be announced after analyzing who killed, collected, and returned the most flies.
1942
A.B. Fogle, Shelbyville, developed a new method for retreading worn car tires. He planned to show his new retreads to Washington officials within a few weeks.
Local children were urged to purchase War Savings Stamps throughout the summer months. Stamp cards were available at the newspaper offices.
1967
Holy smoke! Beacon Baptist church had some damage due to a small fire.
Floyd Wagoner of Waldron resigned as vice-president and director of the State Bank of Waldron and as manager of the bank’s St. Paul branch. Glen G. Clapp, of St. Paul, was appointed to succeed him.
1977
The SHS class of 1967 chose the local Moose Lodge for their 10-year reunion. Reunion committee members were Janet (Rowland) Asher, Kay (Dougherty) Bragg, Richard Gray, Gingi (Branson) Fansler, Jim Meloy, David Carmony, Margaret Haehl, and Barbara (Scott) Eiler.
The SHS basketball state champions of 1947 reminisced at their 30-year reunion.
Donald Eugene Owens, Fairland, enlisted in the Navy’s delayed entry guarantee program.
1992
City officials met to discuss leasing the former Sandefur used car lot on East Hendricks Street for a proposed teen and recreation center. Shelbyville’s previous not-for-profit rec closed in the early 1970s.
Brooke VanNatta received the St. Joseph Board of Education Award, which was based on academics, religion, attitude, and extracurricular activities.
Ryan Claxton, 13, won an expenses-paid trip to Bobby Knight’s summer basketball camp through a Hart’s Frozen Yogurt Shoppe drawing in Shelbyville.
Ryobi announced they would add 120 jobs with a $26 million planned expansion.
Triton Central spring sports award winners were Brad Streeval, Bobbi Thompson, Stacy Deiwert, Shelby Scott, Jill Thayer, Brian Almond, Angie Ott, Steve Sanders, Joe Stephens, Mark Sanders, Matt LeMasters, John Fitzgerald, Chad Streeval, Brenda Ernst, Aaron Warnecke, Dennis Watson, Mike Eaton, Nick Bastin, and Ron Kulpa.
