This Day in Shelby County History: June 13

1917

The Spiegel Furniture Factory raised a water tank high in the air for fire protection services and painted it red, white, and blue as a show of patriotism.

Lots near the fire department on Broadway, owned by A.J. Thurston and George Schoelch, were donated to the city for the firemen to garden. Tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and beans were donated by veteran gardener B.F. Whaley.

The Old Maids Club of First Christian Church surprised random church members with refreshments.

1942

Rev. Sarah Emma Wright Miller, 79, a former resident of Morritown, died. She was a former United Brethren minister on the Blue River circuit in Shelby County.

1967

Zerr’s Market shelled Gen Pro, 11-1, and Joe’s Glass Bar and Montgomery Brothers Insurance also won softball games. Dean Russell, Joe Buening, and Ray Moore all had two hits in the game at Kennedy Park. George Phares, Ricky Jobs, and Frank Zerr also had multiple hits for Zerr’s Market. Raleigh Cox and Eddie Coers hit home runs for Montgomery’s while George Larrison and George Roser had three hits each.

Richard Frank, manager of the Shelbyville PPG plant, was tapped to chair the 1968 SCUFFY campaign. Other committee appointments were Robert McClelland, Ralph VanNatta, Robert Bennett, Lawrence Schneider, Carlos Craven, Donald Jones, F.G. Carron, W.O. Scott, Jim Williams, Major T. Jester, Harry Hanson, Richard Wagner, and George L. Stubbs.

The first annual Glen McNamara Memorial Baseball Award was presented to Doug Ash, SHS senior pitcher and outfielder.

1977

Revs. Barbara Jean Adams, Geneva, and Martha McKown, Fairland, received approval to become ordained at the South Indiana United Methodist Conference.

Army Spec. 4 James Henderson was assigned as a fire direction computer specialist.

Donald Eugene Owens, a Triton Central 1977 graduate, enlisted in the Navy’s delayed entry guarantee program.

1992

Northwestern Consolidated School District board members Carol Wichman and Stephen Eck attended their last official meeting. The two were toasted with punch and cake. Outgoing Southwestern School Board member Chris Petro received a plaque for his years of service.

Vola and Edith (Holmes) Barnes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Shelbyville Church of the Nazarene. They were the parents of Virginia Poteet, Richard Barnes, and the late Glen Barnes.
