1917
Citizens and two city bands were on hand to cheer Larue Taylor and Frank Wolfe as they passed through Shelbyville on the Knickerbocker train, on their way to Fort Monroe, Va. for artillery training. The fire whistle blew at three o’clock, the sign to mobilize the Boy Scouts to march to the Big Four station for the commemoration.
Garments made at the local Elks Lodge by Shelbyville women were regularly shipped to hospitals in France to help with the war effort.
1942
Lowell Hopkins, 25, a former Shelbyville resident, was struck by lightning in Helmer, Ind. and died. Survivors included his widow, Margaret (Pettit), two children, Billy Dale and Sharon Ann, and father, Theodore Hopkins, of S. Miller St.
Funeral director Loren Murphy placed an ad in the Republican saying he was “The Poor Man’s Friend.” His phone number was 7.
1967
The Mental Health Association elected new officers, which included Rev. William Cranford, pastor of the Calvary and Mt. Gilead Baptist Churches, Mrs. William Meloy, John Hoff, Mrs. Fred Cramer, and Russell Meyerholtz. Elected as directors were Mrs. Maurice Linville, Mrs. Frank Scheffler, Mrs. Howard Scott, Mrs. Floyd Shull, Dr. James Tower, Rev. James Arneson, Dr. W.R. Tindall, Ralph Adams, H.B. Kysar, Richard Bishopp, Clifford Bobeck, Agnes Clayton, Fred Cramer, A.R. Ryan, Carl Strait, Elwood Thomas, and H.L. Thomasson.
1977
The LaPetite Day Care Center students graduating were Amy Kuhn, Denise Lucas, Kyle Stafford, Scout Darby, Bryon Kelly, Alicia Goodrich, Julie VanGorden, Stephanie Cook, Mark Cox, Brad Bland, Stephanie Graham, Melinda Dean, Julie Anderson, Duncan Gorrell, and Dawn Shroyer.
Lloyd Werthmann was assigned as the new minister of the Evangelical United Church of Christ.
1992
Gayle Henderson, Darlene White, Lossie Laird, Ann Myers, Jane Myers, Sherry Mohr, and Kathleen Coulston attended the Shelbyville Business and Professional Women’s Club convention in Indianapolis. Jane Oldham was named Woman of the Year at a recent local meeting.
