1917
“Girl clerks” from the Five Cent Store decorated the courthouse lawn in patriotic colors and sold strawberries, ice cream, cake, homemade candies, and flowers to benefit the war effort.
1942
Local and county rural school officials said they needed to start placing emphasis on teaching Spanish due to the “current trend toward closer pan-American relations.”
The Elks Club announced they may purchase the Blue River Country Club. Horace Wagner, Morris Sleeth and George VanPelt were performing due diligence for the Elks Club.
1967
Hark Harkin’s .410-gauge gunshot at a squirrel on a large tree missed and went through the back screen door, striking Mrs. Lilly Hardin in the legs. Lilly, 79, was treated and released from Major Hospital. Sheriff officers found 21 pellet holes in the screen door. Ruby Wigget, 57, their daughter, was in the house talking with Mrs. Hardin when the incident occurred.
Marine Lance Corporal Danny Walters was promoted.
New officers were elected at the junior REC. They were Steve Zeller, Angela Leap, and Tom Carmony. The following were awarded lifetime memberships: Nancy Dellekamp, Jeff Walker, Jim Meloy, Tom Cord, Barbara Scott, Suzanne Wagner, Warren Krebs, Linda McWilliams, Kevin Bass, Sue Main, Don Parker, Mrs. Maynard Payne, Jr., Nancy Yarling, and Ed Wheeler. REC memberships totaled 653; 70 more than the previous year.
Pearl Meloy, widow of James Henry Meloy, died.
1977
The parade barely finished in Fairland when a major rain storm hit. The high winds, thunder, and lightning caused problems for events, but didn’t stop the volunteer firemen from frying fish and onion rings to raise money for the department.
1992
Outgoing Morristown Lions Club President John Thomas received a recognition plaque from new president Steve Rickel. Other officers included Tom Reber, Meredith Garlitch, Duane Linville, Stanley Walton, Marty Mark, and Dick Reed. New members were Mike Carrico, Rev. David Huff, Charles George, and Paul Peterson.
