This Day in Shelby County History: June 22
1917
Thirty-five Shelbyville boys of Battery E. of the First Regiment of Indiana Artillery met at the Boy Scout’s Hall on W. Hendricks St. Word was that the regiment would soon be mobilized.
After a bicyclist rode “against” a woman walking on the sidewalk, “spotting her dress with oil which had collected on the tire of the wheel,” the chief of police warned that bicyclists on the sidewalk would be arrested.
Twenty years prior, in 1897, several Shelbyville men raised funds for prosecuting a case in the circuit court regarding the pollution of Blue River and persons arrested on charges of dynamiting fish. About $100 remained in the fund and suggestions were made to donate it to the war effort.
1942
Farmers were notified of a potential plan to build an airport near Blue Ridge Road, which would affect 30 farm homes and cover 1,200 acres, if built.
The four local Methodist pastors were reappointed. They were Dr. J.W. McFall, First Methodist; Rev. Albert Spaulding, West Street; Rev. A.M. Hamilton, Vine Street; and the Rev. Josephine Huffer, Trinity Methodist.
Shelby County’s oldest twins, Mrs. Flora Lewis and Mrs. Dora Miller, turned 80 years old. Both of their husbands were deceased, each was the mother of three sons, and each had one son who served in the first World War.
1967
General Electric announced a major expansion of a one-story, 100,000 square foot addition on the west side of the plant.
1977
The Elks Country Club retired their old push mower, giving golf course supervisor Orville Alexander a new riding mower. Alexander said, “Aw, now they call me a golf course superintendent…back in ’37 when I started here, we were just plain greenskeepers.”
New officers were installed at Bethel No. 37 International Order of Job’s Daughters. They were Jessica Shisler, Lori Jennings, Sheri Adkins, Lydia Kuhn, Lynn Baatz, Laura Degelow, Theresa Humphrey, Tonya White, Lori Tower, Debbie McRoberts, Cindy Shaw, Marcie Jennings, Kris Nading, Becky Sly, Tamera Purvis, Kathy Wampler, Cari Kuhn, Bonnie Smith, and Robin Miles.
1992
Recent anniversary milestones included Harold and Evelyn (Speas) Amick (50 years); Charles and Laura (Cory) Rabe (50 years); Philip and Janice (Clark) Colee (30 years); Robert and Bonnie (Bell) King (25 years); Clifford and Frances (McGee) Compton (70 years); William and Verna (Ongley) Conrad (40 years); and David and Virginia (Fife) Spitall (50 years).
